Paid Weekend Photography Internship (Silver Lake)

Paid Weekend Photography Internship (Silver Lake)

We are looking for an emerging photography assistant to work on our weekend studio family portrait sessions. We are a high end, small studio with a variable schedule that will require very high weekend availability, from morning until early evening.

This position requires a one year commitment, with the potential of extending your time commitment, or joining us full time.

You will be working with children and families as part of a team consisting of the photographer and two assistants. Since we generally cater to an upscale clientele, your personal presentation and people skills will count as much as your assisting skills. While we don't expect you to be heavily experienced, you should have some basic lighting competence.

The successful candidate will have these qualifications:
Weekend availability throughout the year (we see clients about three out of four weekends, including on holiday weekends; you're there when we need you).
A willingness to work with a fluid schedule (our clients can cancel or schedule on very late notice).
The desire and ability to work with and manage children of all ages (you have to like kids, and they have to like you).
Basic studio experience (that means you are somewhat comfortable with professional lighting equipment, and can name the brands you've worked with).
A high level of dependability and punctuality (applicants with broken alarm clocks, cars that break down, and an inability to account for traffic need not apply).
The ability to make a one year commitment, and to maintain that commitment even if "better" options present themselves in the future.

Compensation:
$8 per hour to start, plus overtime (common during the summer), as a legal employee (with unemployment insurance, worker's comp, etc.).
The opportunity to receive assignments and constructive feedback on your photography, at whatever pace you choose work at.
The potential to advance within our company.

Job responsibilities:
Set up and break down studio at the beginning and end of the weekend (you're the first one in, and the last one out, most of the time).
Assist the photographer during the sessions (that often means holding a light, or remembering important information).
Meet client needs during the sessions ("Can I get you something to drink, or help carry that very heavy bag with all of your clothing up and down the stairs?").
Help pay attention to styling issues during the sessions (that backwards collar will kill the image).
Other stuff (if the trash needs taking out, you'll see and handle it before we even think to ask you).
Excellence in everything you do (that is, and has always been, the only real criteria for retention, promotion and advancement in any intelligent business).

Interested?
You aren't alone, but if you bother to follow these instructions you won't be in the small group of emails we delete when we receive them (most people don't bother to do more than send a generic response).
Please reply keeping the subject line intact from the way in which CL creates it.
Include your name and phone number in the body of the email.
Tell us when you can start, and let us know any scheduling conflicts that may present themselves.
Fill us on on your studio and other relevant experience (be concise).
Tell us why you think you might be the best candidate for the job.
And, as a bonus question only, provide one or two links to photographers who you think do great family portraits.

(Why isn't our company information here? We want emails, not phone calls (and people do call, even if we ask them not to).
If you'd like to know who we are before you apply, just email us!)
