NOVICA, a leading humanitarian website in association with National Geographic, is currently seeking a smart and experienced Financial Controller to be based in Santa Monica.
NOVICA.com was founded with the mission of aiding artisans and preserving ancient craft traditions. NOVICA has quickly become one of the largest handmade gift and home decor websites in the world, selling the works of more than 2,000 artisans in developing nations (over 30,000 limited edition and one-of-a-kind gifts and home decor items, including fine handmade jewelry, clothing, gifts, home decor, and original paintings). We work directly with artists and artisans through our eight regional offices in Asia, Africa, and Latin America.
The ideal candidate should be a high energy, self-motivated, team-oriented professional, able to handle multiple priorities, and have strong communication and some Spanish language skills. We're looking for someone that can thrive in an entrepreneurial and fast-paced environment.
This is a 6 month - 1 year consulting position that involves several internal audit trips to our offices in Lima, Peru and other regional offices. Please do not apply if you cannot travel for extended periods of time (2-4 weeks each trip). This position can be full time or part time.
Specific Responsibilities
1. Develop cost management tools/internal processes to track costs regularly
2. Conduct local audits at the regional level
3. Assist in developing standard operating procedures for the Company's new microcredit program
4. Assist with general accounting department needs.
Profile of selected candidate
1. US Citizenship or permanent US residence.
2. MBA, CPA or related advanced degree.
3. 10+ years relevant professional experience in accounting and finance.
4. Strong analytical skills.
5. Demonstrated staff management, multi-tasking and budget management ability.
6. Strong organizational and negotiations skills, particularly in cross-cultural contexts.
7. Ability to work under pressure and manage and prioritize tasks effectively.
8. Previous knowledge of, and interest in, the field of social enterprise and grassroots development issues.
9. Professional oral proficiency in Spanish and English.
10. Experience working in a developing country.
11. Advanced MS Excel skills. Ability to do financial modeling preferred.
12. Advanced Peachtree, Quicken, or other professional accounting system skills required.
