Job Description:
The Lighting Engineer/ Project Manager provides application support to ensure that our company's LED products meet or exceed the requirements of a wide variety of commercial lighting projects. A wide range of technical and application support activities will be required from project pre-design and specification through installation and follow-up. In addition to product application support, the Lighting Engineer will also be expected to assist with technical matters related to control systems as well as any custom requirements of a project. Will be responsible for directly managing numerous LED lighting projects for public and private sector customers. The qualified candidate will have 3-7 or more years of related experience in project management in electrical construction and lighting. There will be mostly onsite project coordination and trouble-shooting required for this position.
Responsibilities:
- Works with our customers and our Sales Representatives to understand the requirements of projects thereby providing the appropriate technical and application support to ensure all objectives are met.
- Recommend a portfolio of our LED products to meet customers' needs.
- Offers technical assistance and application guidance to the customer throughout the entire project.
- Acts as a liaison between customers, members of the sales team as well as other departments to ensure the project is well managed and coordinated.
- For all projects, will be expected to plan and schedule lighting project timelines and milestones.
- Specify and coordinate installation of lighting control systems if needed
- Participate in project mockups onsite or in house
- Ensures each project is registered in company's computer system and documents are complete, current and stored appropriately.
- Assist in providing a variety of relevant technical and project information including point-by-point photometric studies.
- Coordinate with internal technical resources to set up and deliver technical data such as; specification sheets, 3D photometric studies, etc...
- Working alongside our sales team, assist in the preparation and delivery of detailed proposal / quotation packages.
- Participate in regular project status meetings ensuring that the sales team and Senior Management are well informed of project status.
- Participate in all discussions regarding custom products or other non-standard modifications to ensure best solution is determined,
- Ensure technical and manufacturing coordination on large scale projects.
- Ensure timely and technically correct coordination with any 3rd party integrators. (Show programming, Control Systems)
- Provide after sales technical support services whenever needed.
- Conduct project post mortems and create recommendations
- Provide training to sales agents and integrators.
- Assess training needs and provide Application/Sales Engineer training.
- Recognize areas for process improvement and develop plans for implementation.
- Take charge, upon request, of certain special projects.
Project Management Responsibilities:
- Acts as the primary leader for on-site execution teams on assigned projects. Develops project schedules and executes according to plan for assigned projects. Projects vary from large single campus environments to large multi-site national rollout projects.
- Evaluates the contractual scope of work and the impact of client issued bulletins, field directives and / or scheduling changes. Pursues additional work through change orders. Provides critical inputs for cost estimates and proposals that help negotiate final settlement price and customer acceptance.
- Assists Branch/Hub Manager and / or sales in project development efforts. As a member of the Project Development Team, may assist in surveys and development of cost estimates as directed by Lighting Design Operations Leader (LDOL), GMLP or other members of the project team. Develops sub-contractor scope documents and solicitations for bids and assists in negotiations.
- Manages costs and maintains profitability goals and positive cash flow.
- Reviews and interprets contract Terms and Conditions.
- Analyzes financial reporting systems and project schedules to proactively address potential problems. Effectively communicates project progress, issues and financial status to management as required.
- Manages risks and establishes project recovery plans when required. Resolves disputes with minimal need for escalation.
- Ensures safety policies are adhered to on the project.
- Ensures project document controls are in compliance with contract requirements and JCI standards.
- Oversees project construction for compliance with specifications, local codes and installation techniques.
- Manages the selection, ordering, and delivery schedule of materials to be procured for the projects assigned.
- Develops and maintains viable long-term relationships with customers, consultants, prime contractors and subcontractors. Attends job progress meetings as required. Ensures subcontractors understand expectations of the project.
- Ensures any engineering and commissioning performed by the field team is in accordance with established standards. Facilitates escalation of product related problems.
- Coordinates customer-training requirements.
- Performs other tasks as may be assigned by management.
Requirements:
- Bachelor's degree in Construction, Civil, Mechanical, Electrical or Optical Engineering
- Construction Management or Architecture or equivalent work related experience and minimum of three years of direct project management experience in the Building Construction or Electrical Industry.
- 3 + years of relevant experience with a minimum of 4+ years specifically as a sales or application engineer
- Familiar with HID, LED and Fluorescent sources as well as ballasts, fixtures and LED drivers
- Familiar with lens design for optimal optical performance given a variety of inputs such as luminance distribution and aesthetics
- Understanding of luminaire design and production processes
- Familiar with major lighting types, suppliers, and lighting layouts
- Ability to understand thermal and light level analysis and corresponding test reports
- Understand regulatory requirements (CE, MET, UL, etc) and current standards
- Work closely with back office business analysts on price estimates, ROI calculations and energy savings reports
- Engineering, Purchasing or Sales experience in the Lighting industry.
- Perform energy audits whenever necessary
- Strong written and oral communication skills
- Experience with Microsoft platform business software. i.e.: Excel, Word
- Comfortable in the dynamic atmosphere of a high-growth, product organization with a rapidly expanding customer base.
- Experience at working both independently and in team-oriented environments.
- Ability to define problems, collect data, and to interpret an extensive variety of technical information in mathematical or diagram form with the resultant conclusions then being comfortably presented to both management as well as customers.
- Can easily conform to shifting priorities, demands and timelines as a result of well-developed analytical and problem solving capabilities.
- Management experience with projects related to Lighting is desired.
- Demonstrated verbal and written communication skills. Must have the ability to communicate technical material to a non-technical audience.
- Proficient in Project Management software. Strong Personal Computer working capabilities in MS Office (excel, word, power point) and basic Windows environment.
- Able to travel from time to time based on assigned projects, as projects may exist outside of assigned geography.
Additionally requirements:
Understands the requirements of and the ability to measure/document light levels of various facilities. Understands the energy demand and maintenance requirements of various existing lighting systems and the applicable demands and requirements of proposed retrofit solutions. Understands light color, color rendering, lumen and lumen maintenance, lamp life, ballast factors, system wattage and efficacy of the various systems. Understands the impacts of utility rates, system wattage and operating hours in the design and development of proposed alternatives. Able to identify in the field various types of systems and properly document these and the proposed alternatives utilizing appropriate systems. General understanding of the requirements of electrical installations, circuitry, load, voltage and familiarity with electrical codes.
