The General Accounting Manager is responsible for the General Accounting department and represents the Director of Corporate Accounting as the system owner of the University Financial System (FS).
In this position, the Manager ensures that financial transactions are processed through the accounting systems in conformity with legal requirements, University policies and generally accepted accounting principles (GAAP) set forth by the American Institute of Certified Public Accountants and the Governmental Accounting Standards Board (GASB).

Additionally, the Manager produces financial statements and reports in accordance with GAAP and GASB. The Manager is also responsible for approving and/or requesting all financial system development, enhancement and modification requests to the campus general ledger (FS System). The Manager has budgetary responsibility for the General Accounting department and directs the unit's accounting professionals.

The Manager provides counsel, directs training and communication efforts to more than 400 campus departments and serves as liaison to the external and internal auditors. Development of improved financial reporting and analysis is a key component of the position.

Skills and Knowledge Required for the Role:
Strong interpersonal skills to lead, manage, coach, and mentor diverse staff.
Thorough knowledge of financial accounting and generally accepted accounting principles. Demonstrated ability to produce financial reports consistent with GAAP.
Excellent communication skills to write clear and effective performance evaluations, job descriptions, and employee correspondence. Excellent technical writing skills to draft audit responses, management reports and narratives, and other technical accounting and business briefs.
Advanced degree in business, along with accounting certification.
General knowledge of non-profit and fund accounting concepts.
Strong commitment to ethics, and the ability to maintain a department that is committed to excellence, honesty, mutual respect and integrity.
Ability to make cogent and compelling presentations to management, staff and campus personnel. Represent the University at system wide meetings and collaborate with colleagues to effect change within the organization.
Ability to manage resources and stay within budget. Ability to meet published deadlines and prioritize projects to accomplish objectives.
Demonstrated competence in financial computer systems sufficient to monitor and enhance existing systems, review interfaces between disparate systems, and evaluate the acquisition of new systems.
Self-motivated and able to work with minimal direction on a number of diverse projects simultaneously. Ability to analyze complex problems and develop viable solutions. Ability to explain problems, present solutions and implement changes within the organization, with cooperation and involvement from team members and customers.
Demonstrated ability to provide excellent customer service and respond to customer requests.
Demonstrated ability to work in a team environment and be an effective team player with other campus colleagues.
Demonstrated ability to manage staff and resources effectively to meet departmental deadlines for fiscal close or special projects.
Thorough knowledge of automated accounting systems.
Experience with accounting system conversions and implementations helpful.

Preferred Experience:
Advanced degree in business, along with accounting certification.
Experience with accounting system conversions and implementations helpful.
Experience with Chart of Account development and conversion a plus.
