JOB SUMMARY

The Assistant Chief is responsible for completing his or her work assignments, assisting the Chief in managing daily operations of the facilities, and for ensuring the overall compliance of the facilities to applicable environmental health and safety regulations, policies and guidelines.

The Assistant Chief reports directly to the Chief and assists in supervising the technical staff. In the absence of the Chief, the Assistant Chief temporarily assumes the Chief's roles and responsibilities.

The Assistant Chief is classified as essential personnel and, as such, is required to work with minimal amount of absences and during all Amgen closures except in the event of a major disaster when access to the facilities is prohibited by governmental emergency personnel.

JOB RESPONSIBILITIES

1. This position performs general maintenance on all facets of facility equipment and infrastructure to include but not limited to the following: mechanical systems (HVAC, plumbing, controls), temperature control systems, critical environments, animal research support equipment, , , , clean steam generation, purified water systems, house vacuum systems, various pumps, valves, and piping systems, specialized lab equipment (incubators, autoclaves, bioreactors, , , liquid nitrogen freezers).

2. Communicates with customers, management, colleagues, Planners/Schedulers, Technical Staff and Operations Managers regarding issues, project completion timelines and workload priorities.

3. Performs all assigned facility equipment repairs. Maintains tools, parts, equipment and supplies in clean and safe condition. Acts as a resource for all partners in equipment and service maintenance.

4. Willingness to work in a diverse, multi-skilled team environment and provide guidance and support as necessary to attain operational goals and objectives.

7. Ensure all work orders are completed and closed with all appropriate documentation within the time constraints of the request.
8. Responsible for managing the activities of contractors working within the building either as representatives of the client or as tenants operating within the buildings.
9. Create work requests to correct deficiencies as necessary and ensure timely response and resolution. Assist the Chief Engineer in performing the following duties:

a) Supervise and manage engineers and maintenance staff including hiring, training and personal development
b) Identify the maintenance objectives of the facility and incorporate those objectives into a documented plan that includes preventive, predictive and reactive maintenance procedures.
c) Identify safety hazards within the building and incorporate the remediation of such hazards to ensure that the building's staff and occupants work in a safe environment. Implement, administer, and manage safety training program.
d) Ensure that compliance of all regulatory laws and guidelines are met as they relate to the operation of the building's infrastructure. Responsible for alerting management of building discrepancies.
e) Assist in the development of the Expense and Capital plan which would include planning for infra-structure upgrades, equipment replacements and building modifications to ensure the building's future capabilities are maintained.
f) Ensure that major projects performed at the building are properly planned, executed and closed out in accordance with standard industry practices.
g) Maintain all infrastructure and compliance documentation for the building including up-to-date building drawings and single-lines as well as documentation mandated for the purpose of maintaining regulatory compliance with Federal, State or Local law.
h) Ensure that contractors are appropriately trained and are informed and knowledgeable of all building critical functions and the work they are to perform, including emergency contact information.

10. May be required to work overtime to meet deadlines.

11. Works on-call, weekends, evenings, and holidays as needed.

12. Performs other duties as assigned.

REQUIRED JOB QUALIFICATIONS

1. A HS diploma or GED equivalent.

2. Minimum of five years of relevant work experience.

3. Operating Engineers license or equivalent.

4. Ability to lift 50 lbs. frequently.

5. Excellent verbal and written communication skills.

6. Excellent computer skills, including a working knowledge of the Maximo, Word and Excel.

7. Proven record of excellent internal and external customer service.

8. Ability to work in a fast-paced, demanding environment and the ability to master new skill sets quickly.

9. Commitment to promote and support a collegial and supportive work environment for all staff.

DESIRED JOB QUALIFICATIONS

1. Certification as a Universal Technician for CFC's.

2. Strong leadership and management skills with a demonstrated ability to lead a diverse group of individual performers in delivering services.

3. Maintenance of a valid State Driver's License and good driving record.
